Schnauzer Coat Colors
Black (007)A uniform solid black throughout. Sometimes they can have snips of white on the chest, neck or toes. Blacks that are kept outside can fade to a rust color due to the sun bleaching their coat. Some lines are prone to fading with age and the black will look more like a dark charcoal grey color as they age.

Black & Silver (016)A uniform black color accented with silver or white markings. These markings can vary with intensity between lines. Some poorly marked Black and Silvers are so dark the white markings are almost nonexistent. This is not the desired look for this variety.
|
Salt & Pepper (167)Salt & Pepper is similar to a Black & Silver in that it has the same white pr silver markings, but the coat is actually an agouti color. This means the hair shaft is actually striped. In show dogs the hair is stripped out, so the banded hair grows in correctly. If you've ever clipped your Salt & Pepper, this is why they can sometimes look like they change colors between clippings. Salt & Peppers can vary from a very dark grey, platinum silver in color. When born, these dogs are a shaded brown color at birth. The brown color then changes as they age.

Liver (123)A uniform solid chocolate throughout. Sometimes they can have snips of white on the chest, neck or toes. Livers that are kept outside can fade to an orange color due to the sun bleaching their coat. Some lines are prone to fading with age and the coat will be more of a beige color.

Liver & Tan (124)A uniform chocolate color accented with cream or white markings. These markings can vary with intensity between lines. Some poorly marked Liver & Tans are so dark the white markings are almost nonexistent. This is not the desired look for this variety.

Parti Colors (038)Schnauzers also come in Parti (spotted) varieties. The spots can be big patches of color, or they can look "flea bitten" with lots of tiny speckles on the skin. Usually the Partis will have a mask on the face that covers the eyes and ears, and color on the tail, but not always. Sometimes the color can extend down into the legs, or even just one leg. It really is a beautiful pattern, and makes for a very flashy looking dog!
